At best the Giants will get a pick in the late 70s which is not close to what they would have received for Will Smith.

Your speculating

Im using common sense. If Pomeranz can get us Dubion then Smith would obviously have gotten more and the return would certainly have been more than a pick in the 70s in the 2020 draft. If you dont see that then I dont know what to tell you.
Trading Smith meant that we weren't going for a shot at the playoffs which is a s**t thing to do, imo.

We should have traded Bum as well if that were the case.

Going for the playoffs and getting something in return via the Qualifying Offer was a win-win for the franchise, the fans and Boch.

No doubt we could have gotten more value but that was never the objective. The goal was to make the playoffs. It's easy to second guess that in hindsight, it was the right decision at the time.

His results in Philly got him canned.

It wasn't his results that got him fired. He clashed with some key personalities there. Listening to Frandsen yesterday seemed like som characters with big egos. A lot of people in the Phillies organization apparently have a bunch of good things to say.
He did have a brutal start to his career in 18. Mos managed his pen a bunch but to his defense they had a lot of key injuries to the pen and his hand was forced.

What is he good at?

They add Bryce Harper and he adds one win and still no winning record.

in fairness, he inherited a team that was poop and made them a .500 team both years if that helps.

Understood, just trying to see what this guy brings to the table, they added the best player in MLB and got to .500.

Most managers struggle in their first jobs. Joe Torre was fired from 3 organizations and had only 5 winning seasons in 15 years before landing with the Yankees. Other managers hired this year, including Maddon, Girardi, and Matheny have all been fired.

Maybe Kapler will fail with the Giants but whining about the hire before he has even managed one game with the Giants is nuts in my opinion.

The point is that because of the run we went on, pulling the plug on the season by trading Bum and Smith would have been HORRIBLE PR, not only for the fans, but your own players and coaches. They weren't going to have a firesale after that month, especially in Bochy's last stretch.

Be mad that we got white hot at the worst time. Dont be mad that we didn't trade them.

If you go back and read my posts at the end of the hot streak I said that there was no way that Zaidi could trade Bum because the Giants were too close. And I am not mad now. But there is little doubt that the Giants would be better off today had they done so.

Right, but it's pointless to lament about it now. The hot month made it impossible to trade our biggest chips. It is what it is.
It sucks. Simple.

We are gonna lose Bumgarner. No way he will want to play for the guy who pulled his ace after 5 innings of shutout ball because his analytics told him it was the right move. Just sucks all the way around.

And I dont buy the bad PR stuff. Would Zaidi and the Giants have upset the fans by trading Bum? Sure, some. Will people abandon being fans of the team? No. So who cares if the optics look bad. It only would have benefit the organization in the long run.

I wonder if SD will try to get both MadBum and Strasburg.

Seriously doubt that. I do think they will go all in for Strasburg. Atlanta makes a lot of sense for Bumgarner

Yeah, Bum is going to ATL.
