San Francisco Giants 2019 Off-season Thread

We are gonna lose Bumgarner. No way he will want to play for the guy who pulled his ace after 5 innings of shutout ball because his analytics told him it was the right move. Just sucks all the way around.

And I dont buy the bad PR stuff. Would Zaidi and the Giants have upset the fans by trading Bum? Sure, some. Will people abandon being fans of the team? No. So who cares if the optics look bad. It only would have benefit the organization in the long run.

No doubt Madbum has zero interest in playing for Kapler. They seem like oil and water.

His results in Philly got him canned.

It wasn't his results that got him fired. He clashed with some key personalities there. Listening to Frandsen yesterday seemed like som characters with big egos. A lot of people in the Phillies organization apparently have a bunch of good things to say.
He did have a brutal start to his career in 18. Mos managed his pen a bunch but to his defense they had a lot of key injuries to the pen and his hand was forced.

What is he good at?

They add Bryce Harper and he adds one win and still no winning record.

Most managers struggle in their first jobs. Joe Torre was fired from 3 organizations and had only 5 winning seasons in 15 years before landing with the Yankees. Other managers hired this year, including Maddon, Girardi, and Matheny have all been fired.

Maybe Kapler will fail with the Giants but whining about the hire before he has even managed one game with the Giants is nuts in my opinion.

No one has been able to name one good thing he brings to the table.

LOL I dont think for a minute that Bum would not come back because of the fact that they named Kapler manager. If the Giants offer him the best deal he will be back. If the Braves offer him the best deal he will go there.

AJ Hinch as well.
Ann Killion is going to make every press conference from here on out cringe worthy. Not that it changes anything with her lol.

I agree totally with Steve and I said that for both Smith and Bum. Look at what we got for Pomeranz . Some in here thought the Giants would get 1st rd compensation but that was never the case. At best the Giants will get a pick in the late 70s which is not close to what they would have received for Will Smith.

Your speculating
Im using common sense. If Pomeranz can get us Dubion then Smith would obviously have gotten more and the return would certainly have been more than a pick in the 70s in the 2020 draft. If you dont see that then I dont know what to tell you.

It would have been really interesting to see what offered we got in both Bum and Smith. I personally don't think the streak played too much into it. Not if he was moving other players during that time (Pomz, Dyson). That's always going to be the kicker: what was offered....maybe nobody really offered anything?? I doubt that.

Giants fans should bombard her with her Hope Solo nonsense

Terry Francona was fired by the Phillies too.

I wonder if SD will try to get both MadBum and Strasburg.

Seriously doubt that. I do think they will go all in for Strasburg. Atlanta makes a lot of sense for Bumgarner

It was already reported that SD wont be going after Strasburg. They've spent a LOT of money the last few years.

Should the Giants get in the Rendon sweepstakes?

That was literally his first game as manager 2 years ago. He said hes learned a lot since then and has changed his outlook on stuff like that.

Posey and Bochy both gave strong endorsements for Kapler. Bum would trust their opinion over anything else. Regardless it will come down to money.

As for the "optics" of a Bum trade, it just wasn't an option. You dont want to develop a reputation for being an organization that doesn't believe in its players and coaches, and who tells the fans they DGAF about what they want. When the deadline happened, it would've been the worst thing ever to trade Bum and Smith after that past month of getting right back in the race. In that situation, be the team who backs its players and fans, and says "Our future success will happen regardless, lets try and win if theres an opportunity." Farhan would've made the trades if we got a great offer, but we didn't. Those magical trades just weren't there. Time to let it go.

They wont, and they shouldn't. Its not time to drop mega money on one player. Especially a guy like Rendon, who's contract value is tied to his white hot 2019. I dont like paying a premium based on a career year. If he had been a free agent after 2018 he would be offered a good amount less.

Jas he become good at making pitching changes since then?

It appears the best thing anyone else can say about him is that sometimes good managers get fired. That says a lot.

I dont know. But managing the bullpen is the hardest part about being a manager, and it requires experience to get good at. Bochy wasn't good at it his first few years in SD either.
