I'm surprised fans think my idea of a Global NBA is crazy. Look at the NBA Summer League, Croatia and China are competing against the NBA in the Summer League. Are they doing it for increased good-will to these nations or is the plan unfolding before our eyes.
If you are talking about the NBA playing a few more games in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world to increase exposure and ultimately grow merchandise sales and popularity of the sport.. then I agree with you. If you are talking about having teams in other continents and having NBA players make massive road trips then I could not disagree more.
This. Logistics of it are impossible other than a game here and there followed by a long break.
And there's no way they set up full leagues elsewhere to eventually play a champs tourney. Who's going to play in those other leagues? Either it's second rate players (like current foreign leagues) or you convince top players to play away from the U.S. media spotlight (never going to happen).
Adam Silver has explored possibilities about other formats for the NBA.
So along the lines of a champs tourney, how about something like this:
NBA regular season - 62 games or even less.
NBA Playoffs - 5-5-7-7 format
Whole NBA season is from late Nov to late May
45 day break to mid July
Mid July - Champs tourney Selection: 12 teams
NBA Final Four Teams
Top 4 teams from Europe
Champion team from Chinese/Australian/Philippine/South America
In order to level out the competition between NBA teams and the rest of the world, each of the international teams get to draft up to 3 each players from the other 26 NBA teams (only 1 per NBA team - for example - Real Madrid cannot draft both Splash Brothers into their team)
Players from the other 28 teams can submit their names to the draft pool if they are willing to participate.
Actual tournament can be in mid-August which gives a month for the NBA players to practice with their international team.
Theyll have to work out the compensation and insurance for players and parent NBA teams if they get injured of course
