Sterling blew it by not moving the Clippers to The Pond in Anaheim (now called The Honda Center) in the mid 90s. Orange County loves the Clippers and sold out every preseason game there. it also made sense to have a Clipper on a body of water. they could've made a new logo with a ship not unlike the Buccaneers logo.

I need a visual map image of this possible Clipper fan base.

So frontrunners, rich white beach oceanfront people, - 1/3 of males under 14 - Clipper fans

Regular schmoes, working class, 90% of Los Angelenos and most anybody over 21 - Laker fans

You know LA is a big city with a lot of very wealthy people who want to be seen right? You know the city can easily support two teams right?

You know the Clips had a better attendance average than the Lakers when they had stars (Paul, Griffin)? They had over 100% for six straight seasons from 2012-2017, beat the Lakers in those seasons and we're top 10 in the NBA each time too.

Your take goes directly against what history tells us. LA will support the Clips greatly if they are winning.

You got a link to these stats? Some of this stuff seems kinda far fetched.

He is correct.

http://www.espn.com/nba/attendance/_/year/2012 (you can change the year to verify but 12-17 Clippers were ahead)

Yea that's an interesting time you chose right there 12-17 when Kobe tore his Achilles and we were a perennial doormat. In La, when you have the choice to buy a seat for $100 to a playoff bound clipper game or a $300 ticket for a lottery team laker and take your kids, bring a date to a game as a casual fan (who usually fills regular season seats) or someone that wants to see a live sport, you're going to choose clippers . So your data may be very convincing Looking at stas, but try and think a little deeper into it.

There's a very good reason I showed those years. He was arguing that the Clippers can't get support after I said they would if they started winning. The Clips look to be great again and I showed him that they indeed get great support as long as they win because LA is a superficial sports city ... Like I said previously.

Nice, you call LA a superficial sports city when the link provided shows the Lakers were top 10 in attendance as a bottom 3 team. Any other knowledge you'd like to bless us with? Thx in advance...

LA is more than the Lakers. USC attendance disappears unless they are contenders, UCLA too, Clippers saw a good drop once they were no longer great ... This isn't a groundbreaking idea. It's a widely held belief I've heard my entire life.

Man you're getting into college and the prestigious Clippers just to prove how good of a fanbase the Lakers have. Love it
Wait, when we're the clippers "great"?

Are you triggered or something? I never said the Lakers soecifically have a superficial fanbase. I was talking about the city in general in regards to the Clippers getting support if they are winning. Clippers getting support doesn't necessarily involve the Lakers. As has been said many times, it's a big city, two teams can get a ton of support there.

Yes, the city of LA, is generally seen as a superficial fanbase.

Well yea I see what you are trying to get at, but that's not really that true. Sure if you are talking about the garbage Clippers franchise and 2 colleges maybe. The actual LA teams Lakers, Kings and Dodgers, Galaxy and LAFC all do really well...so ? I am sure if there was a jai alai association they'd be top 10 in attendance as well but I am just spitballin over here...

I wouldn't quite put Dodgers up there with those two. Dodgers have seen steep declines in attendance when they aren't contending. More than 20% in two seasons of 80ish wins during their only down period of the past decade. They aren't USC bad though.
serious question.

Is there or can there be a rough local geographic base for fanbases in LA metro region?

For example, other metro areas with 2 teams like SF Bay Area. Westbay - 49ers/SF Giants, Eastbay - Raiders/As or NYC - Knicks in Manhattan, Nets across the river. Cubs and ChiSox - northside/southside Chicago.

Or is LA just widespread/sprawled out LA and geography is irrelevant? You could live anywhere in the region and you can be just as easily a Dodger or Lakers fan or learn to be a Clippers fan. Anaheim - mostly Angels fans and Ducks fans?

No no. Orange County is all Ducks and Angels. Rancho Cucamonga and other parts of IE have a big Angels fanbase because our minor league team is up there. There are southern parts of LA that are Angels fans, but LBC LA North LA (Calabasas Thousand Oaks) is hardcore Kings/Dodgers and orange county is Ducks/Angels. The only team both OC and LA are united in following heavily is the Lakers. I am not over exaggerating, Clippers fanbase is tiny and has no rhyme or reason. It's fans that hate the Lakers and their success and can't stand Laker fans. Any clipper fan you ask why they are a Clipper fan most say "bc I hate the lakers'. Just good luck finding one.

If theyre planning on building that new arena in Inglewood, I would think they would target their marketing and fanbase building efforts on the west LA/ coastside communities. From Santa Monica down to Huntington Beach.

Seems like blasphemy tho - with the Lakers used to be at the Forum.

Its fascinating. Ive never lived long term in LA but been down there countless times. I just know its entrenched Laker territory and I just dont see a Clipper fanbase really exploding in my lifetime. Even with a sustained run of several championships

That'd be a tough market to catch. Santa Monica and most of west LA is a pretty transient area, so maybe you are able to capture the implants from other states that aren't born into Laker fever. But those are all beach cities that you mentioned including South Bay which is where lakers practice facility all the way to Huntington, where for the most part have the most lackadaisical of fans. There's just too much other things going on.

The best shot for Sterling would be to move Clippers down to Anaheim and completely re-brand, call them the Orange County Clippers or something like that. Then over time you can capture much of the OC market if they feel they have a team. You aren't changing the landscape of LAs b-ball culture from Laker to Clipper, but OC is plenty big enough to start a new brand. Or take it to SD those fans are crazy/great. LA is plenty big enough to have 2 teams but there's a possibility maximizing OC fan base would be more profitable than a huge second fiddle to the Lakers. Who knows.

Arte Moreno with the Angels knew he had the OC market cornered, and is just using LA as a name to grow brand. Angels will always be known as the Angels (from CA, to LA, to Anaheim doesn't matter).

Clippers were already in SD. the very first NBA game I attended was Suns at SD Clippers played at the San Diego Sports Arena in like 1978. World B Free tho!
