90% of these players getting the max are getting overpaid. Such is the NBA

Mozgov is really the only player to live up to his contract.

Don't forget Deng.
Not sure it's the GM holding Boston back. FA's are flying to NY, LA. The fact that the Nets may land Irving, Durant and the Clippers may land Leonard really just says what matters is your brand. Boston has history but it's like the whitest perceived city minus Utah. But hey they ripped Gordon Hayward from Utah so That's a bit of street cred.

Al Horford signed a four year deal with them as an UFA. Marcus Smart just resigned. I think Al's been chasing a ring now and is still and he's going to get paid more than the C's would offer him long-term. IMO incentive to sign with a team as FA is:

  1. Money
  2. Brand/Playing time
  3. Chance to win a championship

Any team who signs him to a 4 year/100M deal is gonna regret it when he's 36 and 37. SO much money is gonna be wasted this summer.

Only reason they got Gordon Hayward was bc of Brad Stevens. They can get guys like Al Horford (who they had to massively overpay) and maybe Vucevic type - but they won't get superstars or even perennial all-stars in FA. It has to do with many things - including the FO

Hope clippers give him that money

Even if he was younger - he isn't worth that.
Free agency is gonna be so fun, can't wait for it to start

I know everyone knows how good D'angelo is but I think he should be higher on some teams wishlist. Still only 23 years old and is starting to peak, great size for a guard at 6'5. Dude is gonna be a stud for a while

The current Nets management is one of the best ones in the entire league. If they are willing to just let him go - that's not a good thing for DLo. Offensively, DLO is very talented - but his defense is atrocious and there are some rumors that his attitude continues to be a problem.

I think he's a good fit for a team that's trying to get out of lottery and contend for playoffs. But, if you're trying to contend for championship - he's not the player you want on your roster. Just my opinion.

I'm sure from a team's and a fan's perceptive - those are shrewd moves. From a player's perspective - it's not.

This is why I always believed that Kyrie will not stay in Boston.

Trading a player is not a problem. Every player and agent understands it's a business. Making them a promise and then now following thru will rub the agents and players a wrong way. You do that enough times - you'll build a bad reputation...and I've read that from many reporters now that players have said this about Boston.
Is there a link where this has come out as a known fact and not conjecture? If in fact that happened then Thomas and his agent are idiots for agreeing to this. But, I dont blame Ainge at all for not giving him a max deal. I always thought he was overrated since he didnt play any defense and giving him that kind of contract would have been really dumb.

Depends on how it is structured. If it's in a way a team can get out of it in year 4 without a major hit, im all for it. I'd give a 2-3 year deal with a ton of money up front

I have heard that on TV from multiple reporters when this was happening. But, here's a link. I am sure there are more reports as time went on and Celtics didn't even make an offer to IT...

"We need the best possible player that's gonna help us win, and I'm with that," Thomas said. "Anything Danny [Ainge] and this organization need me to do to help bring even more talent to this city, I'm all for that. I want to win a championship, and being so close to getting to the Finals, that makes you want it that much more."

Now, of course they were idiots to agree to that...but that's not the point. It's like Aaron Baynes opting into his contract - and was told that he won't be traded. Ppl can say he was an idiot - but players don't appreciate that.
