He had a good run. I wish he would go some where and get a shot. Guess the position is stacked. Maybe that's why the Giants have 14 second basemen

I remember seeing this. Lame. I loved the traditional look. My kids on our travel team all voted for no last names. I left it up to them.

I read that it was Peter Magowan's thing to remove the names to go with the old time theme of the new park. They didn't intend for it to be permanent, but stuck with it for longer than intended. I guess with Magowan's influence gone, and with a new era of players that half the fanbase doesn't even know, they figured putting the names back made sense.
I will miss the classic look, but the gold drop shadow lettering on the cream background will look great.
