I'm not sure I agree. Ohtani is a superstar and the face of baseball. Adding a guy like Ohtani would make other players want to play in SF. I would argue what Ohtani does when a DH and SP far exceeds anything a regular player does. Plus the giants dont have any star that makes fans want to pay to watch them play. As evidence by the empty seats all last year despite what that one poster gaurenteed wouldn't happen. lol
Having said that if you offered me these two choices:
1. Ohtani and nothing else
2. Yamamoto, Lee and Chapman
I will take option 2 all day. The giants need way more than just Ohtani.
I agreed with everything until the end of this post.
Ohtani is unlikely to pitch much if at all in 2024. They would be paying a lot for a left handed DH in a ballpark not friendly to left handed hitter nt named Bonds. Even when healthy he isn't the best pitcher in baseball. Good but not the best. He's not the best hitter or the best power hitter either. If he didn't do both things he wouldn't be nearly as coveted and he won't be able to do both next year. Judge would have been different because he's a proven right handed power hitter that could have still hit 50 HRs a year playing for the Giants.
My concern is that the ownership will feel content if they sign him and not go after other good players. The idea that other good players will want to come to SF if Ohtani signs doesn't make a lot of sense. They weren't exactly flocking to LA when he was with the Angels. Even with Trout in the same lineup they couldn't win.
I'll take 2 or 3 good players and let some home grown talent develop.
