2024 San Francisco Giants Season Thread

Jon Heyman just reported that Ohtani's final three were the Dodgers, Angels and Blue Jay's.

We didn't even crack the top three. SMFH

Does it really matter if the Giants were 2nd or 4th? The Dodgers had the location, the pedigree, the reality of winning the division every year, and were willing to pay the most money. I doubt the Giants really ever had a chance.

And the Bluejays have more of that than we do?

Stupid signing by the Dodgers. $70 mil per year will be 20-25% of their payroll. If he gets 600 at bats that comes out to $116,000 per plate appearance. If he pays in 150 games that's over $466,000 er game.

This is stupid on 2 counts. One the Dodgers didn't need him to bring in fans. They already draw well. Two they've had a loaded lineup for years and have one wprld series title to show for it. That was in the shortened Covid year. Baseball isn't like basketball where one star can make a huge difference. There's also no guarantee that he'll be the same in 2025 when he starts pitching again.

Good news for Giants fans. Now the Giants can concentrate on other free agents that they have a better chance of signing.

Yeah I'm not that mad at $700 million. Bankruptcy time lol

That's crazy.

Ohtani deferring a lot of his pay - so it's not making a hunt dent on the payroll

Eventually they have to pay him. Deferring the money may make the let other players go down the road. It depends on hoe far the money is deferred. No matter how youy cut it it's a lot of money for DH. As I said before. they didn't need him. They draw as well as anyone already and adding one more big name is ni guarantee of winning. Hiw well has that formula worked for them or the Padres or Yankees. In the last 20 years those 3 teams have amassed a lot of talent and have 2 World series titles to show for it. The Yankees in 2009 and the Dodgers in the Covid year of 2020. The Giants have more than thise 3 combined and they did it without any high priced, overpaid superstars in their lineup.

And I would say... who the hell cares? 2nd or 3rd place was meaningless. But in reality, Toronto gave him a much better chance than the Giants to make the playoffs. Ohtani, Bichette, and Vlad would have been quite the 2-3-4 punch.

This is a 10 year contract. Who gives him the best chance to win in 2024, can't be the determining factor here.

I understand your point though. You either sign him, or you are one of 29 teams who didnt. Where you finished doesn't matter in terms of that player. To me, it just speaks of a much larger issue, that players don't want to come here.

Who cares? Not that I'm in love with The FarSide, but if some of his draft picks begin to pay dividends next season, much will be forgiven.

Ohtani wanted to win now. The Giants cant offer him that in it's current state.

Glad that weird sh!t is over. So much for him saying that if a team leaked information he'd hold it against them.
