Let's be honest, would you rather have this deal or the Shohei deal, which is 10 year 700m (forget the deferred, they have to pay it all out eventually)

do i have the homer goggles on here, or do we say our deal is better?
Shohei isn't gonna pitch next season, and that's comical money for all of a players 30s, what happens if he hits the wall at 34

I would rather have Shohei but what are you going to do? That ship has sailed.

at that ridiculous price? maybe revisit in 4-5 years, when Shohei is running into a wall known as father time, and our guy is still on contract and not yet 30 or barely..

At the price for Shohei, he basically has to be the two way stud for most all a decade, if he's pitching or hitting only as skills erode, it's a gigantic overpay, next year he's not pitching already, just a fat contract DH

I was willing to do it without deferment. The deferment makes the deal a no brainer. The giants would make 10x that amount off of Shohei over 20 years during the span of the contract.

this was looked into, Shohei nets somewhere in the teens to $20m annual, and that's MVP level Shohei,
do the math on how that adds up to 10x the contract amount, you are talking $7b

Where's our Finance guys at? We're talking a present value (PV) compared to future value (FV) comparison. If we do the calc at PV we can see how much it really is even with the small annual payments set at PV.

Our fault for making things equal.

So what, a cool billion over 10? At what point does this go from smart to stupid? Dodgers may have already crossed the line. Time will tell.

I have said this many times before. At a certain number, does it really matter if you go higher? If we offered him $70M a season, is $75-80M a season any different?
Alright, time to speak about moving forward. Lee is a good first step. But anything less than 2 other high end free agents is not enough.

If he does this in LA, there will be a fight.

Whats the upside for Chapman? At best .250 and 20 homers. (and those numbers are unlikely) Why pay a ton of money for a guy who just hit .240 and .229 for Toronto. HARD PASS given the amount he will likely get although I wouldnt be surprised at all if the Giants do sign him.

The Giants need to go after guys with bigger upside. Lee was a nice start (even if the $ are much higher than projected).

Agreed 100%. Been seeing people tossing out 6/$150M figures.
