Bargain hunting and signing perceived legit players to big contracts, only to allow the opt out after one year. So, a pitcher like Snell who wound up having overall very strong year but couldn't move the needle because of the mediocrity around him, is gone now. While any players who stunk, opts in and will only continue to crowd payroll to the detriment of the team.

The return we could've gotten for Rodon and Snell. Ugh

And Madison Bumgarner
And Will Smith

Nobody offered anything for Bum.

I bet you no one offered anything for Snell either, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have been hunting for a trade.

Maybe we were? How can you know?

With Bum they had to weigh the impact of trading a beloved franchise guy vs the value of the return. Other teams probably knew Bum was going to test the market after making peanuts for 10 years, so I doubt anyone offered anything more than an inconsequential minor league player for him. At that point its worth more to let him finish out the season and get a sendoff.

Bingo. Just like you dont know anything you wrote in the 2nd paragraph other than he was beloved.
The PBO has some words.

lol your assumption is pure conjecture though. Mine is based off of obvious factors that consistently determine teams' motivations. Bum becoming a free agent is a clear reason why teams wouldn't offer much for him.
I guarantee we got offers for Blake snell lol wut
Will be interesting to see if Doval gets dealt.

it was reported the offer for Snell at the time was very weak. Trading someone just to trade him is a bad move, especially when the return sucks.

Considering they want to reduce payroll by $25 million, that wouldn't surprise me.

I guess that means we aren't going to see them try and sign a big name.

Everyone got excited about Posey? Don't. He doesn't control the team purse. Just like Sabean, Evans and Zaidi didn't. He'll have to dumpster dive to find the unexpected gem or bring in one time great players who had been injured or in the decline for a few years on the prove it basis trying to prove themselves one more time. And pray they do.

Then he would have been traded.

The Giants had one of the highest payrolls in the game last year, and have made mega offers to multiple superstars over the last few years. It's just that nobody wants to come here.

With the front office declaring that they want to lower the payroll it's unlikely that they will be trying to sign any big names. The reportedly lost money last year. Rich people hate losing money more than poor people.
