He's not a great offensive player but he's a great defensive player. That helps a lot. Those offensive numbers are out of a total of about 450 players. Actually more since player s go on IR and others take their place. He's in the top 10 among 3rd basemen in most offensive categories so I would say he's at least good.
Again, nobody is arguing he isn't good. And he is a great defensive player. All that is being said is overall he's a good player, not great.
And being 10 of 32 at your position coupled with Steve's post is all the proof you need he isn't "great".
I don't think I ever said he was great. If I did I meant it about his defense. I think defense gets overlooked a lot in this era when so much is about offensive stats. He's not 10 of 32 at hs position. Some sites rank him as high as #2 overall. I don't know about that but he was #2 in doubles, #5 in HRs, #7 in RBI, #5 in SLG, #4 in OPS, #6 inSB and #10 in BA. Combine that with another gold glove and that puts him solidly in the top 10 among all 3rd basemen. We also have to consider tht his numbers would likely be even better with a better lineup around him and if he was playig in a more hitter friendly park. Likely would have over 30 HRs if he played at several parks around the league.
Very good but not great.
