i'm fine with no alonso but we should really think about adding a quality SP like jack. alonso would be fun but at the end of the day he's a 1 tool player. you should be getting pitching or more than 1 tool.

Except Alonso is the highest rated defensive 1B according to advanced stats lol

I think the issue with Alonso is going to be contract length. If the Giants could sign him for 2 years I'd be fine with that. That would give Eldridge plenty of time to develop his fielding skills. He would still be only 22 by then.

They arent doing it so it doesnt matter. But Alonso wants a long term deal. And the Mets owner has stated the negotiations with Alonso have been horribly painful

i don't think that's correct.

i checked his career and last season Dwar and it's in the negative. also i see this from google:

Pete Alonso's defense has been criticized as lacking, despite his reputation as a slugging first baseman.

Defensive stats
In 2024, Alonso's defensive runs above average (DEF) was -69.6, the worst among first basemen
In 2024, Alonso's DRS was -3, which some say doesn't inspire confidence in his ability to play first base
Other comments
Some say that Alonso's defense leaves a lot to be desired
Some say that Alonso's age works against him, as he would likely command a longer-term deal
About Pete Alonso
Pete Alonso is an American professional baseball player who plays first base
He is nicknamed "Polar Bear" for his power, big body, and fun-loving personality

you just gave me a list that's sorted a-z. he's coming up 1st, cuz he's alonso. the entire list is alphabetical.

baseball savant has him 3rd percentile on d metrics. i will link that here
2nd percentile on arm, they spell it out that that percentile is poor, while his hitting metrics like bat speed, are elite, 93rd percentile

overall they have his d as 11th percentile, and his bat at 84th, and his baserunning at 3rd percentile.

See, the reality is they are not cheap, they are pragmatic. The ownership structure makes them pragmatic. And there is very poor way to run a sports franchise in the pragmatic manner. Unless you contend to stay in the middle of the league, hope to squeeze into the playoffs here and there if everything breaks right for you and wrong for your playoff immediate competitors. Not bad as your As and Pirates and nowhere near the championship.

I like Alex Pavlovich's quote:
"It doesn't appear the Giants are involved with Pete Alonso, Jack Flaherty or others left at the top of the market, but they have plenty of payroll flexibility if they want to be opportunistic in the next couple of weeks."

No Alex, they don't. Mr. Baer's "measured approach" is the code words for payroll slushing. Like 40M slushing, exactly the number they were throwing in some time ago. And no baseball president is going to change that, Posey or God if he was one. The one who can distinguish himself is who can get really creative on the budgeted mandate shoved at him by the ownership. The problem is right now they can't really get creative as it used to be (Sabean days).

lol
I wanted Pete Alonso, he has improved defensively over the years but if he dont want to DH he can f off. My desire to get him was also before the rapid development of Eldridge... Posey has discussed his desire to keep BE in the minors all year unless he simply just forces their hand.

It does not make sense to invest so much into Alonso if BE could be our next home grown star in the next year or so.

I have a feeling he's going to be in the majors this year because of course one of Zaidi's guys is going to break through post his firing, you just know it's going to happen and I am here for it.

i don't factor eldridge into the convo. he may be great he may not. let him beat the door down. that may or may not ever happen. i just look at this rotation and not good enough comes to mind. that's what sunk our operation last year.

i guess advanced stats are only as advanced as the person using them. the upshot is i found a good website it is known as baseball savant. they showcase how players stack up relative to peers using advanced stats. i am having fun with the site so far.
