Because our farm system is a joke. Pretty simple.
True, but in this case, they had abundance of pitchers. If they were planning on using Hicks as a starter again and with Birdsong in the picture, they could have made Harrison available and added Matos. With Tucker they would have had nice, young outfield of Ramos, Lee and Tucker and didn't need Matos or Luciano. With left side of the infield set, Flores/Encarnacion mostly manning DH for now, and eventually hopping Eldridge takes over 1st base, that would have been nice looking team.
It may seem like we had an abundance of pitchers, but we truly dont when you compare to other systems. When you look at the trade the Cubs made, they traded:
-Isaac Paredes, a 26 year old who was an All Star in 2024
-Hayden Wesneski, a 27 year old who has had more success in limited MLB time than Kyle Harrison has had (not as highly ranked as a prospect though)
-Cam Smith, who was ranked as a top 75 prospect at the time of the trade
We couldnt/wouldnt have come close to offering that much for Tucker. If Buster called the Astros and made an offer of Harrison and Matos for Tucker, the conversation would have ended almost immediately. Now, considering I would be willing to bet that Harrison wasnt even on the table, it would have made our potential offer even more laughable.
