Catchers are judged differently, their careers simply don't last long
In the last 60 years there hasnt been a catcher that had less than 2000 hits or 200 homers that made the Hall. Here are the catchers that did make it:
- Johnny Bench 2048 and 389
- Yogi Berra 2150 and 358
- Gary Carter 2092 and 324
- Carlton Fisk 2356 and 376
- Mike Piazza 2157 and 427
- Ted Simmons 2472 and 248
- Pudge Rodriguez 2844 and 311
Buster has 1500 hits and 158 homeruns.
Again, I am not in any way shape or form saying that Buster shouldnt make the HOF. I am simply saying voters will look at these stats and possibly hold that against him

Going to miss Buster for sure. I dont think he will make the HOF but he will go down as the greatest Giants catcher ever. Hard to believe how time flies. Seems like yesterday that he was a rookie leading the team to their first WS title in SF.
lol you honestly don't think he's making the HOF?? I think he's a lock. Best catcher of his era. Elite at every aspect of the position. MVP. Key factor in 3 World Series titles. World class human being. I can't imagine a scenario where he isn't elected.
I think Buster Posey will make the Hall of Fame. However, if you get a group of voters who are overly focused on statistics, it may take him a while. Considering his accomplishments and awards/accolades, he should get in. But theres always a chance people look at his stats and vote no.
IMO certain players define a generation, and are already in the voters heads as a HOF type guy. Posey was THE guy for 3 WS title teams, and a perennial All-Star at C. He was the box the baseball fan kind of automatically checked on the All-Star ballot for NL catcher without really looking into the numbers.
I think when his name hits the ballot in 5 years the voters will remember "3 rings, MVP, All-Star regular", and the last memory of him was being that guy in 2021. He ended as good as he started. I don't think they will feel a ton of need to dig into the numbers and talk themselves out of it. He feels like a no-brainer legacy type guy where the numbers wont need to be a tiebreaker.

The key difference is Posey has three fat rings to lay on the table, all of which were won because he was on the team. That goes a LONG way with voters. Its basically a trump card for every doubt someone presents.

Mods will soon not allow Posey talk in the Giants thread, as he is no longer a Giant
see Ruggs thread.

As much as it pains me to say - I think there is less than 50% chance that Posey makes the HOF. I agree with John - his numbers don't come close to catchers who have made the HOF and these days voters are voting more based on numbers than anything else. If he played another 3 years at similar levels at his past year - he gets in imho.
Hope it changes and they give a deserved value to ROTY, MVP and 3 World Series but HOF is about longevity as much as accomplishments. You need both to get in. Tough to get in with a 10 year career in this era. But, if anyone can get in with 10 year career - it has to be him.

This will likely happen. Especially being on the West Coast - there is an inbuilt disadvantage with most games starting at 10pm for the East Coast media members. Anyone who has watched him play on a consistent basis will tell you - he's a 1st ballot HOF. But, it is what it is.
He's always gonna be legend in the Bay though.

Jorge Posada has 4 fat rings to lay on the table to go along with his 5 All Star teams and 5 Silver Sluggers. He fell off the ballot the first time he was on it. And his counting stats are better than Posey's too.
Look, I agree with you he is a Hall of Famer. I believe his resume is strong enough. The point John and I are trying to make is that Posey's case is exponentially further away from a lock than you do.

One of the top baseball awards in college is even named after him. It will be a travesty if he doesnt get in.
