I know. You hear a lot of former WWE superstars saying they make more on the Indy scene. I believe it.

Cody Rhodes has been saying he's making a ton more now

He said he makes 3x more per match. It's ridiculous. WWE is great for "fame" but not cash money unless you are a main eventer
Per Cody:

Cody does the indies a lot, so that is a huge part of his income. ROH & NJPW are owned by big companies so he definitely gets a huge chunk from there. But what might be the real difference maker is merchandise.

Cody has been making great merchandise money on his independent run. However, his moniker of The American Nightmare has helped a lot more than people know.

Cody's American Nightmare Bullet Club t-shirt is the third highest selling t-shirt in Hot Topic, according to the Wrestling Observer. The only two other t-shirts to outsell Cody's are Rick and Morty(#1) and The Young Bucks(#2). That itself is a huge statement.

The Observer also implied that there are two Bullet Club t-shirts in Hot Topic outselling all of WWE's merchandise, so it's possible that Cody's American Nightmare t-shirt is one of them.

Another thing to note is that although his gross income is higher, the expenses on his end are likely a lot more too. Regardless, it's clear that he's earning way more now than he was in WWE, and that is a justifiable reason not to come back anytime soon.

He's doing good for himself, but guys making that much money in the indies is pretty rare. There's probably no more than 10-15 people making better money than they would if they were in the WWE. But for the most part, that WWE exposure helps them earn better if they leave WWE.

Somebody like Breeze who barely makes 200k, could leave, and charge at least 3-4k an appearance, and easily make 40-50k a month. I know when Rey left he was charging 10K, but that's pretty much the max you will get on the indie scene, and even that is rare. Ryback charge 4k and he got some bookings, so you can make better money than 200-300k a year on the indie scene if you have that WWE exposure already or if you are top guy in the indies. But even AJ didn't charge more than 4-5k an appearance.

Guys like Kenny Omega and Young Bucks, they make good money, but the lower/mid card guys for ROH for example, aren't going to make more than $500 if they are lucky.

The thing with the Bullet Club related shirts too compared to the WWE shirts is that they're much easier to wear in public than the WWE shirts. WWE makes crappy looking t-shirts that no one wants to wear outside of a WWE show. One of the few exceptions was CM Punk's shirts for awhile. I wore this one all the time but a lot of the other ones are too ridiculous to bother wasting money on.

Makes sense. I bet if Daniel Bryan is released he will be making a killing in the indies.

Ryder knows the IWC too well.

This is why I have hard time believing any SI reports when it comes to the WWE lately. That part with the Rock allegedly telling Nia to leave never made any sense. It is as if they are trying to make a name for themselves by making up s**t:

-- It was recently reported in a story at Sports Illustrated that Nia Jax walked out of the company due to being upset at having to possibly lose to Sasha Banks at the TLC PPV. The story went on to say that Jax called up her cousin - The Rock - who advised her to walk away if she was unhappy.

-- Apart from X-Pac recently going on record to state that he doesn't believe the Rock would advise Nia to walk out, the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter also indicates that all the rumors about her being unhappy about the money she was making and/or the creative plans for her character are untrue.

-- The situation is as simple as she was granted a few weeks off because she wasn't planned to be involved in any main programs on Raw. Jax is expected back for the European tour that begins next week and is also scheduled for Survivor Series later in November where she is expected to team up with Banks, Bayley, Mickie James and team captain Alicia Fox to take on Becky Lynch, Charlotte, Carmella, Naomi & Tamina.
