Hours later, the 49ers announced the signing of veteran WR Louis Murphy to a one-year deal. In order to make room on the roster, the team waived injured rookie LB Jimmie Gilbert.
Murphy, who is 30 years old, was originally drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. In eight years as an NFL player, he has spent time with the Raiders (2009-11), Carolina Panthers (2012), New York Giants (2013), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-16). Murphy has appeared in 88 games with 28 starts. During that time, he has 162 receptions for 2,322 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Following Monday's practice, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Gilbert has suffered a torn ACL that would require surgery.
Gilbert was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 4 after playing college football at Colorado. During his four years with the Buffaloes, he had 147 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 20.0 sacks, and eight forced fumbles.
The 49ers have Tuesday off and will next practice on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. PT.
