The San Francisco 49ers and Mike Person have agreed to a new three-year deal that will pay the guard up to $9 million with $3 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. He was scheduled to become a free agent on March 13.

"Mike earned the respect of everyone in our building for the way he battled through injury last season to start all 16 games and perform the way he did," general manager John Lynch later said via a statement issued by the team. "Aside from his toughness and durability, he brings tremendous versatility to our offensive line, and we look forward to his contributions to the growth and development of that unit. Mike is exactly the type of person and competitor we look for, and we are very happy to have gotten this extension done."

The 49ers made Person a seventh-round draft pick out of Montana State in 2011. He lasted one season with that regime before being released on August 31, 2012. Person was inactive for all 16 regular-season games and both postseason matchups during his rookie campaign.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that the 49ers hoped to sign Person to a new deal and prevent the guard from hitting free agency.

"Person is a free agent and we'd love to have him back," Shanahan said via NBC Sports Bay Area. "But we have a lot of directions to go so hopefully we will get him back. I was really happy with what Mike did for us this year and we will see how this goes up to March 13th. It'd be awesome for him not to get there, but you know how I feel."

Person spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, and two stints with the Indianapolis Colts before re-joining the 49ers on May 9, 2018. He started a career-high 16 games at right guard for San Francisco this past season and ended the year as the team's third-highest graded offensive lineman and highest-graded guard, according to Pro Football Focus. Only tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey earned higher grades from the analytics site.

The versatile Person has NFL experience at center, guard, and tackle. He spent two seasons with then-offensive-coordinator Shanahan in Atlanta in 2015 and 2016.
