The San Francisco 49ers made a surprising move on Tuesday, placing veteran wide receiver Marquise Goodwin on injured reserve and ending his season, according to Field Yates of ESPN. The team later confirmed the move.

Goodwin did not play during Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints and has been inactive for two of the 49ers' last three games. He has just 12 receptions for 186 yards with a touchdown through nine games this season. The receiver's last reception came on November 17 against the Arizona Cardinals, and it was his only receptions since an October 13 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Goodwin is in his third season with the 49ers and seventh in the NFL. He appeared on the 49ers' injury report last week with knee and foot injuries.
"He's dealing with some chronic stuff," head coach Kyle Shanahan shared on Monday. "We're evaluating treatment options right now."
San Francisco initially signed Goodwin to a two-year contract on March 9, 2017, and then signed him to a three-year extension on March 8, 2018. He is scheduled to count $5.125 million against the salary cap in 2020, and $6.475 million in 2021, putting his future with the 49ers very much in doubt.
The 49ers are also expected to place center Weston Richburg, who suffered a torn patellar tendon against the Saints, on injured reserve. That will open two spots on the roster.
The 49ers made other roster moves, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. The team has signed linebacker Joey Alfieri to the practice squad and placed linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles on injured reserve from the practice squad.
Flannigan-Fowles left last Thursday's practice during special-teams drills with an injury.

The 49ers also signed offensive lineman Kofi Amichia to the practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

The 49ers later announced some corresponding practice-squad moves with the release of wide receiver Deontay Burnett and linebacker Christian Sam.
The Philadelphia Eagles signed Alfieri as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford on May 10 and then waived him on August 2. He was claimed off waivers by the New York Giants the next day and later waived by the Giants on August 31.
The Green Bay Packers made Amichia a sixth-round draft pick out of South Florida in 2017. He has since spent time with the Baltimore Ravens (2018-19) and Carolina Panthers (2019). The latter waived him from injured reserve on September 24.
Will Marquise Goodwin be on the #49ers roster in 2020?
