The San Francisco 49ers held their third of 13 scheduled training camp practices. Below are some practice notes from various media sources.

Did not practice:

  • DE Nick Bosa (maintenance day)
  • WR Jalen Hurd (maintenance day)
  • DT Maurice Hurst (ankle)
  • TE MyCole Pruitt (calf)

"He'll be out for a little bit," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Pruitt after practice. "Maurice Hurst is day-to-day with a slight ankle."

Limited:

  • DE Dee Ford (neck, back)
  • DT Javon Kinlaw (knee)

The practice opened with rookie offensive lineman Aaron Banks firing up the fans.

Shanahan's son, Carter, joined his dad for practice today. He starts football next week and even got in some work fielding punts.

"He wasn't within 20 yards of one," Shanahan said, "so I told him I'd give him five dollars if he just touched one. And the last one, he ran through and touched it, and I think he almost broke his arm."

It's worth noting that Marcell Harris is working at linebacker, transitioning from a safety. He had two pass breakups during practice.

"Marcell, he's my locker-mate, so we talk a lot," linebacker Dre Greenlaw said. "The transition for him, I mean, having him in our room is going to be great. It's going to be a great add having somebody that can cover and just has that [defensive back] kind of mindset that can kind of help us in some ways, whether it's covering running backs or covering tight ends. ... He's coming along as far as just becoming more of a linebacker."

Added Shanahan: "We know what he can do at safety. We're just seeing what he can do [at linebacker]."

Brandon Aiyuk had impressive outings during the team's first two practices but was held without a reception today. After practice, the wide receiver said that he added four pounds of muscle, dropped body fat, and built endurance for his sophomore NFL season. Trey Lance tossed a "wobbler" of a pass downfield to wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who caught it while going against safety Jared Mayden for a would-be 50-yard touchdown. (Bay Area News Group)

According to Cam Inman's quarterback report, Jimmy Garoppolo was 6-of-11, and Lance was 6-of-10 during team drills. There were no interceptions, but linebacker Jonas Griffith came close to picking off Lance. It wasn't the rookie's only miscue.

Jacob Hutchinson (KNBR) noticed at least four poor throws from Lance during the Friday session, including under-throwing wide receiver River Cracraft down the left sideline. Hutchinson also notes near interceptions of Lance passes by defensive end Arden Key and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

The head coach was not too concerned.

"You don't have to get on him too much," Shanahan said. "When he doesn't have a good throw, he knows it as much as anyone. I just like that he keeps firing it. I mean, some are going to be good, some are going to be bad, but the more you get reps, the more you get your feet under you and know where you're going, the more consistent that will be."

Hutchinson clarified that Lance's day was not full of mistakes.

"To be clear, Lance also had some flawless, dart throws, which he's done in every practice, including OTAs," the KNBR writer wrote.

No one was perfect. Garoppolo had his own mistakes on Friday but did show a great rapport with wide receiver Mohamed Sanu on a couple of passes on slants over the middle. Edge rusher Samson Ebukam had two would-be sacks and was causing problems for the offense when he wasn't going against veteran left tackle Trent Williams. Key and Anthony Zettel also had would-be sacks. Defensive tackle Zach Kerr is proving to be a force against the run game. (KNBR)

"He's in shape. He's explosive. He's strong," Shanahan said of Ebukam. "We're not surprised. We've played against him twice a year for, I think, the last four years. So, he's been exactly what we hope for."

Cornerback Tim Harris had a pass breakup going against tight end George Kittle. It was his third consecutive practice breaking up a pass. Daniel Brunskill and Tom Compton have alternated working at the right guard with the first-team offense this week. It was Brunskill's turn on Wednesday and today and Compton's on Thursday.
