After Tuesday's practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters and was asked about Jaquiski Tartt, who remains on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list with a toe injury. The safety was seen on a side field getting in some work during practice, creating optimism that he might return soon.

Shanahan was less optimistic about Tartt's chances to get back on the football field anytime soon.

"Not moving very fast right now," Shanahan said of Tartt's progress. "I mean, he hasn't been out there. I know he missed some time with COVID. I don't know how long he's going to stay on PUP, but I don't see him coming back anytime soon right now."

Shanahan was asked if the 49ers expect Tartt to play this season, and the coach wasn't entirely sure.

"We think he should, with the timeline and everything," he added, "but it is bothering him. He isn't ready to go yet. We thought he would be with the time that's been given. He isn't, and that is just a fact, so it is what it is. ... I don't see it as day-to-day right now. I know he's not where he wants to be or where we want him to be. It's going to take some time.

Shanahan also said that linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is in the concussion protocol, and wide receiver Jalen Hurd did not practice because some issues have surfaced. The coach feels the receiver's unavailability may hurt his chances to prove himself before the season.

"I know he's battling back from a serious injury, and we know the potential he has and the upside and how much we think he can help us, but he's got to show that," Shanahan said. "And there's not a lot of time left. But we want to be smart with him. I know some things were bothering him today, so we were smart with him. Hopefully, he can get in a grove where he has a chance to go out there and play some football and give himself a chance to make this team."

Hurd spent the last two seasons on injured reserve and has yet to take a regular-season snap with the 49ers.

Shanahan added: "He just didn't feel right this morning."

Safety Tony Jefferson is dealing with a groin/hamstring tweak. That could prompt the 49ers to add another safety.
