San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today's practice at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. He provided several injury updates as the team prepares for its Week 2 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee) will be among the injured players who will not practice today. Both were inactive for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Shanahan was asked if Kinlaw's injury is something that might have to be managed throughout the season.
"We're not sure. That's why we're trying to take it slow with him," Shanahan answered. "And when we have, it's gotten better. So, you've got to see how that continues to react. I think we'll be easy with him today. Hopefully, if it continues to go well today, he'll get out there more tomorrow.
"When he hurt his knee in Dallas last year, it was a pretty bad injury that he ended up going on IR. He got it cleaned up, but it still hasn't healed quite as right as we want. So, it seems like it [is better], but when he's gone, it's just started to affect him. So hopefully, taking it easy these last 10 days or so, it will start to get better, and we'll see how it goes day to day."
Getting Moseley back would be a significant boost for a 49ers secondary that lost its other starting cornerback, Jason Verrett, for the season to a torn ACL. The coach was asked if he expects Moseley's injury to be a long-term issue.
"No, I don't think so," Shanahan responded. "We knew we had a chance last week, really, which made me feel pretty good this week. I think the traveling, stuff like that, doesn't help a ton. That's why he's not practicing today. We'll re-evaluate it tomorrow. I don't think it will be a long-term thing."
Shanahan also provided another update on Jeff Wilson (knee). The running back is on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list but is expected to return this season. The 49ers coach is hesitant to set a return date right now, though.
"I think he just started running and stuff," Shanahan said. "I hate to give a date [for his return] because just like I did on Monday [with Raheem Mostert]. I could be wrong. It seems like to be a big deal if I correct myself. I'm hoping in November [for Wilson]. I guess that's the area that we're saying, but it could be a little earlier; it could be later."
Shanahan added that linebacker Dre Greenlaw (groin) and defensive lineman Arik Armstead (abductor) will not practice today. Armstead is a surprising addition to the list. Although, Shanahan said he would be "surprised" if the veteran defender did not play on Sunday against the Eagles.
Defensive end Dee Ford and linebacker Marcell Harris will be limited in practice.
