If the San Francisco 49ers wanted to prove they were indeed ready to make a push towards a playoff spot over the second half of the season, they needed to take care of business on the road Sunday against a lowly two-win Jacksonville Jaguars squad that headed into the weekend as one of the NFL's worst teams.
They did exactly that, taking control of the game early and never letting up in a one-sided 30-10 victory over the Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.
Several statistical categories were dominated by the 49ers, who outgained the Jaguars 333 to 200. The 49ers ran 66 plays to 44 from the Jaguars, held a 25 to 14 edge in first downs, and outrushed the Jaguars 171 to 54 while holding a time of possession advantage of 38:22 to 21:38. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-22 passing, while Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished 16-of-25 for 158 yards.
First Half
The 49ers put on an impressive display of dominating time of possession in their 31-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams on November 15, and they picked up right where they left off on their opening drive against the Jaguars. Two costly third-down penalties by the Jaguars helped the 49ers along the way, but they were able to turn the opening kickoff into a 3-0 lead after a 20-play drive that took a whopping 13 minutes off the clock. The 49ers marched from their own 11-yard line to the Jaguars' 2-yard line but missed a touchdown opportunity when Garoppolo missed a wide open Jeff Wilson on a second-down throw into the end zone, then after Wilson ran for no gain on third down, head coach Kyle Shanahan elected to call on Robbie Gould to kick a 20-yard field goal instead of attempting to convert on a 4th-and-1 play.
A three-and-out from the Jaguars sent the ball right back to the 49ers, and this time they didn't need nearly as long (3:56) to put points on the scoreboard. The 49ers got across midfield in a hurry when Garoppolo connected with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on the first play of the possession for a 34-yard gain then six plays later took a 10-0 lead after wide receiver Deebo Samuel ran into the end zone from 25 yards out to cap an 80-yard drive.

Things continued to go the 49ers' way on the Jaguars' next offensive play when cornerback Josh Norman knocked the ball from the arms of wide receiver Laviska Shenault, causing a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Fred Warner at the Jaguars' 35-yard line. The 49ers got a gift on the third play of the possession when Jaguars safety Rayshawn Jenkins threw a punch at wide receiver Jauan Jennings that wound up getting him ejected and giving the 49ers a first down instead of a would-be fourth down, then Garoppolo found Aiyuk on a 3rd-and-Goal from the 6-yard line to give the 49ers a 17-0 lead.

The Jaguars finally got going offensively on their next possession, putting together a 12-play, 67-yard drive that finished with a 30-yard field goal from kicker Matthew Wright to cut the 49ers' lead to 17-3 with 1:53 remaining in the half. The 49ers were able to use that time to their advantage, putting together a seven-play, 45-yard drive that finished with a 48-yard field goal from Gould as time expired in the half to extend the lead to 20-3.
The 49ers dominated the first half statistically, holding a total yardage advantage of 215 to 83 with an edge of 16 to 4 in first downs. The 49ers were 5-for-7 on third downs in the first half and held the ball for 21:45 against just 8:15 for the Jaguars.
Second Half
The Jaguars opened the second half with possession but punted to the 49ers after a three-and-out that took just 26 seconds off the clock. The 49ers responded with an 11-play, 77-yard drive that finished in a 4th-and-Goal touchdown pass to tight end George Kittle, which extended their lead to 27-3. The drive featured 32 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards from Samuel, then after attempting a pass to left tackle Trent Williams on third down, Garoppolo found Kittle from one yard out for his second touchdown pass of the day.

Much of the remainder of the second half was fairly uneventful from that point. The teams traded punts after brief possessions following Kittle's touchdown, then the Jaguars punted again after a 12-play possession that spanned just 17 yards but moved the game into the fourth quarter. The 49ers then punted after a three-and-out but got the ball back at the Jaguars' 44-yard line when wide receiver Trent Sherfield recovered a muffed punt by returner Tavon Austin. The 49ers later moved the ball to the 27-yard line, where Gould connected on a 45-yard field goal to open up a 30-3 lead with 5:38 remaining in the game.
The Jaguars responded with their first touchdown drive of the day, an eight-play, 79-yard possession that ended with a one-yard touchdown run from running back James Robinson to cut the deficit to 30-10. The 49ers took over with just over three minutes remaining in the game and were able to run the remainder of the clock out from there.
The 49ers moved to 5-5 with the win, which keeps them in the hunt for a wild card spot in the NFC. They'll be back in action at home next week when they host the Minnesota Vikings at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, November 28 (4:25 p.m. ET/1:25 p.m. ET, FOX) in the first meeting between the two teams since the 49ers' 27-10 win over the Vikings in the 2019 Divisional Playoff round. The Vikings are now 5-5 on the season after a 34-31 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, giving the game a high amount of significance for the playoff hopes of both teams.
