San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Tuesday afternoon, the only media availability before Thursday night's game against the Tennessee Titans. He provided some encouraging news on his special-teams return man, Trenton Cannon, who suffered a concussion during the opening kickoff against the Seattle Seahawks on December 5.
It was a terrible way to start an NFL game, as teammates, coaches, and fans watched the returner taken by ambulance to a nearby Seattle hospital.
"Trent Cannon's doing good," Shanahan told reporters. "He was in the meetings today. I got to see him for the first time in a little bit. But it sounds like he's doing a lot better. Still in the protocol and stuff, but just his health, and how he's feeling seems pretty good."
The 49ers will hold their only practice of the week on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. PT inside of Levi's Stadium. Shanahan also provided the following additional injury updates.
LB Azeez Al-Shaair (elbow) and S Jaquiski Tartt (ankle) will be limited.
The 49ers are evaluating rookie safety Talanoa Hufanga to see if he can practice with his teammates. He suffered a knee sprain on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
Shanahan also confirmed what general manager John Lynch said on KNBR Tuesday morning, that Mitchell recently took "a positive turn." The rookie running back has been cleared of the concussion protocol. However, it's the knee injury sustained in Week 13 that has put Mitchell's status in question.
"He had some encouraging things happen this weekend," Shanahan noted.
