The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have released running back Tevin Coleman ahead of this weekend's game against the Los Angeles Rams, which Field Yates of ESPN first reported.
The move was not entirely unexpected. Last week, San Francisco traded for star running back Christian McCaffrey, who was active and played on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Niners signed Coleman to the practice squad on September 21. He was elevated from the practice squad for two games (Rams - Week 4, Panthers - Week 5) before being promoted to the active roster on October 12, ahead of the Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Coleman has rushed for 26 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries this season. He also has three receptions for 44 yards and a receiving touchdown. This was the running back's second stint with San Francisco. He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the 49ers.
Coleman's release creates a roster spot. The team has until Wednesday to decide if it wants to activate cornerback Jason Verrett (knee) from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
