The San Francisco 49ers knocked off the visiting Miami Dolphins 33-17 on Sunday, doing so with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy at the helm of the offense, not Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo suffered a left foot injury on the team's first offensive drive and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the game, providing an update on his injured starting quarterback. Garoppolo suffered a broken foot and will undergo season-ending surgery.
"Just hearing it, it was pretty crushing," Shanahan said. "We know what Jimmy's been through, how hard he's worked at this. I got the news in the second quarter, so it was a little different for me ... it was such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about Jimmy.
"I told the guys right after the game, so I know that gave them some mixed emotions fast too, but it was a hell of a job by Brock, coming in and stepping it up. He did a real good job today, and we're going to be ready to do our best to overcome this."
Shanahan added that Garoppolo left the stadium in the third quarter. The coach also said there isn't a possibility that the 49ers would try to activate second-year quarterback Trey Lance from the injured reserve list down the road. The offense appears to be in Purdy's hands moving forward.
Garoppolo has started every game since Lance went down in Week 2 with a season-ending ankle injury. With the win, San Francisco improves its record to 8-4 and will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Levi's Stadium in Week 14.
The San Francisco 49ers traveled to Green Bay with their season, if not their very soul, on the line. After a 38-10 beatdown, the 49ers' vague postseason hopes are officially over. Whatever pulse left in the heart of this team is the twitching remnant of a team not worth...
