According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers have completed interviews with former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley and 49ers defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen for the team's vacant defensive coordinator position.

The 49ers are seeking to fill the void left by Steve Wilks, who was dismissed after the team's defeat in Super Bowl 58. Wilks served only one season as San Francisco's defensive coordinator, during which the unit ranked eighth in yards allowed, third in points allowed, third in rushing yards allowed, and 14th in passing yards allowed during the regular season.

More interviews are on the horizon. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers' defensive backs coach, Daniel Bullocks, is expected to interview later this week.

Additionally, Maiocco reports that the team will likely interview at least two other candidates from outside the organization this week. However, Shanahan did not disclose the identities of these candidates.

Staley spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, amassing a record of 24-24 during his tenure and making one playoff appearance.

Sorensen wrapped up his second season with the 49ers, his first as the team's defensive passing game specialist, following a year as a defensive assistant.

Bullocks has been with the 49ers since 2017, Shanahan's first year with the team. He started as the assistant defensive backs coach, then transitioned to safeties coach before assuming his current role.
