There was concern that Spencer Burford would require surgery on his broken hand. On Monday, reporters noticed the offensive lineman had a substantial wrap over his right hand and wondered if the procedure had already occurred. After practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified that Burford has not yet undergone surgery.
"He's still got one more doctor to talk to today," Shanahan shared. "I'll have an answer for you guys next time I speak with you guys."
Shanahan also announced that defensive end Drake Jackson will not be healthy enough to participate in training camp. Jackson is recovering from patellar tendon surgery, and Shanahan does not have a timeline for his return.
"We've got to see how rehab continues to go, but definitely not any time in camp," Shanahan said. "... Anytime you do that type of surgery that he had ... those are big surgeries. They're tough to come back from. You never know how they're going to react. We always know it's a possibility to take a long time, and it's taking a long time."
Jackson started training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Wide receiver Jacob Cowing and running back Isaac Guerendo are dealing with hamstring injuries. Shanahan hopes Cowing can return next week, while Guerendo is expected to miss "a few weeks."
Additionally, Shanahan revealed that wide receiver Tay Martin is also dealing with a hamstring injury and is "in a similar boat" as Cowing.
