Brandon Aiyuk is typically a confident football player, but ahead of Wednesday's practice in Santa Clara, the wide receiver admitted something unusual—he was hesitant to review the film from Monday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets.
While the 49ers won the game, Aiyuk knew it wasn't his best performance. He finished with just two catches for 28 yards, his first significant action since signing a contract extension that made him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers.
"I think after the game, I didn't watch the film until this morning," Aiyuk said. "I was a little bit scared to watch it, but not as bad as I thought."
Aiyuk felt he hadn't lived up to his own expectations, particularly after a potential touchdown pass slipped through his fingers near the end of the first half. Quarterback Brock Purdy had thrown a perfect pass, but Aiyuk couldn't haul it in.
"Yeah, it was a dime," Aiyuk admitted.
Last week marked Aiyuk's first return to practice since February, raising questions about how his body would respond after his first game back. However, the receiver didn't seem too concerned about how he emerged physically from Week 1.
"It felt good. A little sore," Aiyuk told reporters. "Solid, though."
He hopes to increase his workload this week and bounce back with a stronger performance in Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
