The NFL, on Saturday, announced that it has fined San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams $11,817 for punching Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook in the head last Sunday in the 49ers' 28-18 loss to the Chiefs. Williams was understandably frustrated by his team's sloppy game against the team to whom the 49ers lost the Super Bowl in February. But it was Cook's actions that sent the future Hall of Fame tackle over the edge.

Williams was on the ground following a play when Cook decided to take a cheap shot and hit Williams in the head. Williams, in turn, responded by smacking Cook in the head. The 49ers star tackle was immediately ejected from the game. Cook was not ejected.

Cook was fined only $8,442.64 for his part in the altercation. 49ers fans will undoubtedly be confused by Cook being fined less than Williams, even though Cook initiated things. The fine levied against Williams is consistent with NFL fines for striking, kicking, or kneeing. Why Cook was fined over $3,000 less for doing the same thing is not known.

Sunday's game between the 49ers and Chiefs got a little testy in the second half. CB Deommodore Lenoir was also fined $11,817 for his unnecessary roughness penalty. Kansas City's WR Skyy Moore was fined $9,356.83 for his actions on the same play on which Lenoir was fined.

San Francisco is currently 3-4 and will host the 3-3 Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. This game is considered a must-win for the 49ers and Cowboys, who have been struggling.
