On Thursday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Isaac Guerendo is unlikely to play against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Speaking on Bay Area radio station KNBR, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Guerendo's chances of suiting up are a "long shot."
"I haven't talked to the trainers yet to officially rule him out, but it's been a long shot all week, and I'm sure that'll most likely be the case tomorrow," Shanahan said.
Guerendo is the latest casualty in the 49ers' injury-riddled running back room. The rookie managed to play through a foot sprain against the Los Angeles Rams last week but exited the game with a hamstring injury. Patrick Taylor is expected to step into the starting role if he cannot go.
The 49ers also have Israel Abanikanda on the active roster and Ke'Shawn Vaughn available on the practice squad.
San Francisco's running back depth has been severely tested this season. Elijah Mitchell was placed on injured reserve before the season even began, while Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason are both sidelined with injuries.
