The San Francisco 49ers have made their first notable coaching change of the offseason. According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, the team has fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider.
The #49ers have fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider, sources tell ESPN.
Schneider, 53, finished his third season with the 49ers after joining head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff in 2022. He previously spent 11 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks (2010-2020) and a one-season stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2021).
The 49ers' special teams under Schneider have been marred by errors, drawing significant criticism, particularly regarding kicker Jake Moody's struggles this season. Missed field goals proved costly in several games. Schneider advocated for the team to draft Moody, which they did in 2023, using a third-round pick.
Schneider's coaching career began at Colorado State (1994-2002), followed by positions at UCLA (2003–2005) and Iowa State (2006). His NFL journey started with the Oakland Raiders (2007–2008), and he later spent one season (2009) as USC's special teams coordinator before joining the Seahawks.
The 49ers wrapped up the 2024 season with a disappointing 6-11 record, landing in last place in the NFC West and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
