Nick Sorensen will not return as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator in 2025, although head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes to retain him in another role on his staff. Meanwhile, the team is closely monitoring former 49ers defensive coordinator and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who is interviewing with the Jacksonville Jaguars and may explore other opportunities around the league.
If those head coaching opportunities don't materialize, the 49ers are expected to extend an offer to Saleh to return as their defensive coordinator, according to a report by Josina Anderson. Saleh would replace Sorensen, providing a familiar and proven presence to lead the defense.
Just-in: I'm told Robert Saleh's first head coach interview with the #Jaguars is Tuesday. Another head coach interview is expected thereafter. The #49ers are also expected to make him an offer at defensive coordinator, per sources. https://t.co/RZ1zgicFsp
Saleh originally joined the Jets in 2021 after a successful four-year stint as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, where he transformed the unit into one of the league's elite defenses. His leadership was instrumental in helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl during the 2019 season.
The Jets fired Saleh on October 8, 2024, after starting the season with a 2-3 record.
Following his dismissal, Saleh joined the Green Bay Packers as a consultant, where he assisted in preparing for their Week 12 matchup against the 49ers—a game the Packers dominated, winning 38-10.
