Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the San Francisco 49ers have interviewed New York Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer for the same position in Santa Clara.
Maiocco also notes that former 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen, who was considered a candidate for the special teams coordinator role, will not be hired. Although head coach Kyle Shanahan previously expressed interest in retaining Sorensen in some capacity, the coach will no longer remain with the 49ers.
The 49ers interviewed Brant Boyer for special-teams coordinator opening, source said. He has served as NY Jets ST coordinator since 2016. The 49ers expect to have position filled next week. It will not be Nick Sorensen, source said. He is not expected to remain with the team.
Boyer has been the Jets' special teams coordinator since 2016. Before that, he served as the Indianapolis Colts' assistant special teams coach from 2012 to 2015.
As a former NFL linebacker, Boyer played from 1994 to 2004 for the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns.
